Roofing Industry Trends You Need to Know

TRI BUILT State of the Industry Chelsea
June 27, 2023 at 6:00 p.m.

By Evelyn Witterholt.

We speak with TRI-BUILT's Marketing Director Chelsea Oesch about the roofing industry trends they are currently seeing.

Staying on top of what’s happening in roofing is a must for everyone in this industry. By knowing what challenges the industry is facing and what is becoming more popular amongst consumers, you can strategically plan your business dealings around these things. In a recent podcast with Chelsea Oesch, marketing director for TRI-BUILT®, she offers an interesting perspective on what is currently happening in the roofing industry.

Chelsea begins our discussion by explaining that TRI-BUILT is one of the many companies that is under the umbrella of Beacon Building Products. She states that this has helped their brand expand as they now have over 400 branch locations in the U.S. and Canada. Beacon is also the only publicly traded roofing distributor, which Chelsea says offers more opportunities and a different perspective of the roofing industry.

One of the trends she has been seeing in the industry is shingle recycling. Chelsea sits on their corporate social responsibility council and leads their waste recycling subcommittee. She tells us that this has given her an inside look at the shingle recycling opportunities that are currently available to the industry.

“Some of those big shingle manufacturers out there have developed a process in the past couple years to start to work to incorporate recycled materials back into the shingles,” she says. “But there's also a lot of other processes out there from using ground shingles into road base, spinning the oil out of shingles, and the craziest one is there's a fungi that can eat old shingles.”

She also touches on important industry topics, including product availability and roofing contractor backlogs. Chelsea stated that products are more readily available now than back in 2020, but also that TRI-BUILT didn’t face as many inventory issues.

“We really had a unique opportunity during this product availability issue because we found that TRI-BUILT was widely available to all of our contractors during these more inventory challenged times,” she says. “And so it really was kind of the product that was able to save their day because we had it available and stocked at all of our branches.”
