David tells RCS COO Karen L. Edwards that returning to the FRSA feels like coming home for the holidays. This is ATAS International’s thirtieth show, and with so many old friends on the expo floor it really does feel like a big family reunion. “We feel like family, don't we?” says David to Karen, even though this is their first-time meeting.
It is no surprise that David sees the roofing industry as a family, ATAS International is a family business in every sense of the word — to them the roofing industry has always been a family affair. “Jack Bus, the founder of the company, he started off as a sider and he realized that there were products that would be very useful for other contractors and decided to start manufacturing,” says David, explaining the history of ATAS International. “He started with a gutter machine, actually rolled gutter in his basement, out the basement window and then he would load that up into this little box truck and his son, Dick, who's now our president, would deliver all these products, get new orders, come back up and start again.”
Now a third-generation company, ATAS continues the spirit of familial love by placing an emphasis on education and taking new contractors under their wing to get them started in the industry. “If you're a contractor coming into the business, you could contact someone at ATAS, we offer educational sessions, we offer hands on installation,” says David. “We can help contractors get started, and maybe for the guys that know what they're doing, they can give them some tips that can help them be even better.”
