Overcoming cash flow challenges in roofing

Overcoming cash flow challenges in roofing
March 30, 2025 at 6:00 p.m.

By Jesse Sanchez.

Effectively managing payments and cash flow presents a significant opportunity for roofing contractors to strengthen their financial stability and drive business growth.

In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, host Heidi J. Ellsworth discusses the critical topic of cash flow management with industry expert Brian Cancian from Foundation Software. From tackling payment delays to combating fraud, the discussion covers why efficient cash management is essential for roofing businesses to thrive.

"Cash is king," Brian states early in the conversation, expressing the fundamental role of liquidity in construction operations. As the business development manager at Foundation, Brian brings decades of experience in accounting solutions tailored for labor-intensive contractors. The company, founded in the mid-1980s, has built a reputation as the leading provider of accounting software for construction firms, including a strong payroll system that handles complex tax regulations, union requirements and certified payroll reports.

One of the most pressing issues contractors face is the challenge of collecting payments. "You can bill as much as you want as often as you want... but if you're not getting paid, it doesn’t matter," Brian explains. Delaying payments can hinder a company's ability to pay suppliers, meet payroll and take on new projects.

Fraud is another growing concern. "Checks that have been mailed out just never show up," Brian notes, expressing how the traditional mail system can be unreliable. In response, more companies are shifting toward electronic payments to mitigate risks. "The ability to bypass our mail system, to bypass the cost of paper checks, postage and envelopes — that's what takes effort and that's what slows down payments."

By embracing automated and electronic payment systems, roofing contractors can significantly enhance their cash flow and streamline collections. These technologies not only reduce administrative burdens but also minimize the risks associated with payment delays and fraud. As the industry continues to evolve, adopting modern financial solutions will be essential for maintaining efficiency, stability and long-term growth.
