The overlooked goldmine

The overlooked goldmine
March 3, 2025 at 12:00 p.m.

By Jesse Sanchez.

Why service is the key to roofing success.

Service in commercial roofing embodies more than just the task of fixing leaks — it’s the foundation of a thriving, scalable business. That’s the message Bryan Mitchell, a seasoned roofing industry expert, will bring to ServiceCon 2025. With decades of experience in commercial roofing and business development, Bryan is passionate about helping contractors transform their service divisions into profit-generating powerhouses.

“People don’t get into the service business because they don’t know how and a lot of people that do get in go about it the wrong way,” Bryan explained. He has seen firsthand how a struggling company can turn into a multimillion-dollar operation by shifting its approach to service.

At the heart of his message is the importance of understanding the full potential of a well-run service department. Many roofing contractors focus almost exclusively on reroofing projects, but Bryan argues that service is the true untapped goldmine. “The beauty of service is 100% of roofs need to be repaired and maintained,” he said. “In your journey of building a service business, you uncover reroof opportunities.”

Bryan stated that a strong service business doesn’t just supplement revenue; it lays the groundwork for larger, more lucrative projects. “For every dollar in service, you should be doing four or five dollars in reroof,” he explained. “The one complements the other, so they grow each other.”

The challenge, however, is structuring a company that can handle service efficiently. According to Bryan, the key is focusing on the right processes and metrics from the start. He said, “What we teach is how to structure your company so that you grow a strong service department. And how do you develop the processes to run it?”

Despite the clear advantages, many contractors hesitate to build out their service divisions. Bryan attributes this to misconceptions about profitability and complexity. But, he insists, the numbers speak for themselves. He noted, “A service company that does $30 million a year makes enough money to pay the overhead of a $70 million roofing company.”

If you’re a roofing contractor looking to expand your business, Bryan’s insights at ServiceCon 2025 will be invaluable. Attendees will learn how to create a service model that not only sustains itself but also fuels long-term business growth.
