The Benefits of Diversifying Your Roofing Business

Palisade General Contracting
May 20, 2023 at 6:00 a.m.

By Cayden Wemple.

With the unpredictability of the last few years, many contractors have pivoted and diversified their roofing businesses to offer more than just roofs.

Diversifying your roofing business can really make your company stand out. Industry pros Randy Knox and Robert Ricci of Palisade, (a sister company of the building product brand, IPG), were invited to talk construction diversification on a recent episode of Roofing Road Trips.

“It makes really good sense to [diversify] if you're a roofing contractor,” Randy explained. “It used to be that it really didn't matter what state you were in, roofing contractors really didn’t have to be licensed or anything like that. Now with all of them having to get roofing licenses, which is only one step away from a general contractor's license in a lot of states. So now they're going and getting those licenses as well.”

Roofers are very well-rounded contractors in terms of having skills and knowledge of various aspects of construction. “It makes perfect sense [to diversify],” Randy continued. “It's easier for a roofing contractor to go to siding window guy than it is for a siding and window guy to be a roofing contractor. I feel roofing contractors get overlooked at how difficult their job really is.”

Another reason contractors excel when diversifying their services is because they have a deep understanding of how water infiltration works. Robert explained, “I truly believe that roofing contractors have a [great] understanding of how water intrusion problems happen and how they can be corrected. What I've noticed, especially with the trend to self-adhered membranes on the wall, roofing contractors have a [deep] understanding and they're [fantastic] craftsmen. They understand the membrane portion of the installation more so than others, so it seems to be an easy segue for them.” Palisade
