Standing up for safety stand-downs!

Tremco Safety Stand Down POTW
June 30, 2024 at 9:00 a.m.

By Emma Peterson.

Safety training is paramount in the industry and Tremco is constantly finding new ways to raise the standards.

Safety is one of the most important topics in the industry and Tremco knows this. In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Karen Edwards hosts the Executive Director of their Health, Safety and Environmental team, Ro Lewis, to talk about global safety initiatives. This team is responsible for nearly 2,000 employees across the globe, with Ro’s job focusing on strategy and implementation. He and his 16-person team have worked on everything from “corporate safety initiatives and comprehensive implementation to safety practices and principles.”

One of the ways Tremco supports global safety initiative is by highlighting OSHA’s global safety stand-down. Ro explained what this is, sharing, “Initially it was to prevent falls across industries by encouraging employers to participate by hosting a stand-down to discuss fall protection and safety when working from heights.” For 2024, OSHA’s stand-down took place from May 6 to May 10.

This is hugely important for all industries, but especially for those like the roofing and construction industries. Ro highlighted this, saying, “Just think about how many times a work crew of four that we send out travels up and down a ladder daily. It's our duty to not only discuss fall safety, but to also invest significantly in training our people on how to continually implement the appropriate precautions and safe work measures to prevent falls and injuries.”

Beyond just participating in OSHA’s global safety stand-down, Ro and Tremco are taking it a step further by creating their own Tremco Field Services Global Safety Week. The inaugural event occurred last year, and they see it as a continuation of OSHA’s May event. Ro explained a bit of what happens at this event, saying, “It aims to provide our people an opportunity to focus on our comprehensive safety culture and examine and actually celebrate our employees' daily safety performance.”
