Benchmark’s President, Vincent Ellison and Sr. Roof Consultant, James Santiago brought candid insight and industry optimism to the Sound Stage at International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC) 2025, highlighting the growing need for connection, innovation and shared problem-solving in the building envelope industry.
Vincent, now president of Benchmark Inc., reflected on his journey from new hire to leading the teams who are focused on both roofing and paving consulting. “It’s been quite a journey for me getting to work with people like James,” he said.
James, a senior roof consultant based in Long Island, New York, expressed how invaluable IIBEC has been for professionals like him. “It’s good to go to a place where you can speak on issues and everyone knows what you’re talking about,” he said. He noted the rare occurrence to engage in “shop talk” with others who are facing similar technical challenges and pain points. Vincent also expressed what a great networking event it is.
The duo’s enthusiasm was especially evident when discussing emerging technologies. One standout moment: a session on the initial use case for artificial intelligence. “It’s just a big buzzword right now... how can we implement it to make our lives easier,” James said, but he sees real potential for AI to support tasks like condition assessments and report writing.
Beyond the buzzwords, though, the interview circled back to something more grounded — collaboration. “We’re all very passionate about our perspective,” Vincent said, “but we’re learning how to really put the client in the middle.” He praised IIBEC for fostering that kind of collective mindset, one where consultants, manufacturers and contractors align for better outcomes.
