Metal Roofing Without Coastal Restrictions

DuPont Coastal restrictions for Metal
April 2, 2023 at 6:00 p.m.

By Anna Lockhart.

Podcast guests discuss a recent roofing project that was located on the beach and how they chose the best metal roofing for the job.

On a recent episode of the Roofing Roadtrips podcast, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Corynn Sheridan and Kyle Nurminen to talk about metal roofing and the benefits of using Metal Alliance’s DuPont™ Tedlar® Film in a recent coastal roofing project.

Contrary to popular belief, it is completely possible to install quality and long-lasting metal roofing on a beachfront property. Kyle Nurminen from Total Roofing Systems recently installed a gorgeous metal roof on a property down in Florida using quality roofing materials that were made to withstand harsh weather conditions often associated with coastal life. Corynn Sheridan, marketing director for DuPont™ Tedlar®, shares how such a feat was possible using their metal roofing film.

“The no coastal restrictions [of Tedlar] is all due to that chemical resistance, that corrosion resistance performance. We know that Tedlar® is going to do just fine in these really demanding environments with salt buildup, exposure to whatever is in the environment, especially in these coastal applications,” Corynn explained, “We have over 60 years of real-world data showing that Tedlar® does fine. So, we have up to 50-year warranties within 1,500 feet of the coast. The chalk and fade, everything holds right by the waterfront... And we know Florida's a super demanding environment as well, so we're really excited to be growing with Kyle, his company, and various other companies in Florida that are testing the product there.”

The decision to go with Tedlar® was a sound one, as the product not only withstands highly corrosive zones, but also is self-cleaning. With the chemical makeup of Tedlar, nothing can really grow on the roofing nor does it react to materials it comes in contact with. The coating doesn’t require any rinsing or washing maintenance like other metal roofing choices, making it a perfect choice for such an ever-changing environment like coastal Florida.

The homeowners couldn’t be happier with the choice, especially now that an often-forgotten foe of southerners in the springtime is hitting the south in full force- pollen! “Tedlar stays the same color throughout the duration of the finish for 45 years. The pollen that is kicked up all over the neighborhood now with these dark bronze and black matte roofs that a lot of the people are putting on their modern homes, the Tedlar® is bright blue and there is no yellow pollen on it. The rest of the neighborhood is all yellow,” Kyle pointed out. “The homeowners are super excited about that!”
