Liquid applied roofing: Transforming roof restoration

Tremco Liquid applied roofing: Transforming roof restoration
September 18, 2024 at 3:00 p.m.

By Jesse Sanchez.

Discover how advanced liquid applied roofing systems redefine roof restoration.

In this CoatingsCast™, host Heidi J. Ellsworth explores the advancements in liquid applied roofing with Josh Poole, a senior product manager at Tremco. Josh offers a detailed look at how Tremco’s innovative systems are redefining roof restoration, focusing on performance, sustainability and the importance of proper installation.

Josh, who has been with Tremco for nearly 19 years, expresses the significance of a thorough approach when dealing with liquid applied roofing systems. “We’re not just going up and applying a coating or painting roofs,” Josh clarifies. Instead, Tremco's method involves partially, or fully reinforced systems designed to address high-stress areas such as laps, penetrations and flashings. “It's a membrane, it's a system that is complete,” he adds, identifying the difference between traditional coatings and fully reinforced liquid systems.

Assessing the roof is critical to determine its suitability for restoration. Josh notes the importance of starting with a visual inspection and moisture survey, stating, “Coating or applying liquid products over a wet roof is never going to end well. It doesn’t matter which product type or what you’re using.” He advises that if more than 20-25% of the roof is found to be wet, it might not be a viable candidate for restoration, suggesting a potential shift towards roof replacement.

One of the key products Josh promotes is Tremco's AlphaGuard™ BIO Roof Restoration System, a two-component, bio-based urethane system praised for its rapid cure time and virtually odorless application. “This product can be applied or installed as normal operations go on without any risk of any issues occurring,” says Josh, making it ideal for sensitive environments like hospitals where ongoing operations cannot be disrupted.

Josh discusses how liquid applied systems help extend the life of existing roofs, thus minimizing landfill waste and contributing to environmental goals. “We’ve diverted thousands and thousands of tons of landfill by taking this restoration approach,” he explains, marking Tremco’s commitment to sustainable practices in roofing.
