Liquid-applied roofing from assessment to installation

Tremco Liquid-applied roofing from assessment to installation
August 19, 2024 at 9:00 a.m.

By Dani Sheehan.

Learn from industry experts when you listen to this conversation on how to achieve excellence with liquid-applied roofing solutions.

In a recent CoatingsTalk, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Josh Poole, product manager for Tremco Roofing’s liquid-applied products, to discuss the evolution and advantages of liquid-applied roofing systems. For roofing contractors, understanding these innovations and their correct application is critical for delivering high-quality, durable roofing solutions.

Liquid-applied systems, particularly those fully reinforced, offer significant strength and durability benefits. Josh explained, “Providing that reinforcement throughout that system is just going to increase or complement the performance characteristics of those liquids.” These systems, which include a base layer, a scrim reinforcement and a top layer, provide a complete membrane solution not just a coating, ensuring better long-term resistance to movement, higher strength values and improved durability.

Before applying a liquid-applied system, however, a thorough assessment of the existing roof is essential. “You really need to assess each roof individually... So, passing the visual inspection is step one,” Josh emphasized. This assessment involves physically stepping onto the roof, checking for structural issues and conducting infrared moisture surveys and taking core samples to identify any underlying moisture problems. Proper assessment ensures that the chosen solution is appropriate for the roof’s condition, preventing costly mistakes and ensuring long-lasting results.

Even the best products require skilled installation to deliver their intended benefits. “You could have the best product or the best system in the world, but if the crew that’s installing the product aren’t well-versed and don’t know what they’re doing, you’re not going to end up with the intended end result,” Josh shared. Tremco works closely with the Weatherproofing Technology Inc. (WTI) installation crews not only to develop and launch superior roofing products but to ensure crews are proficient in the latest techniques and best practices through extensive training programs.
