In a recent episode of the Roofing Road Trips® podcast, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Chris Meyer from VaproShield to discuss groundbreaking advancements in the roofing industry. Heidi, known for bringing innovative products and ideas to her audience, introduces Chris as a long-time collaborator and expert in commercial roofing.
Chris, the director of low-slope roofing at VaproShield, explains the company's evolution and its recent foray into the commercial roofing market. “VaproShield has been in business for over 20 years, initially focusing on wall water-resistant barriers,” Chris explains. The company’s venture into steep-slope underlayments has paved the way for their current innovative approach to commercial roofing.
The core of VaproShield’s new initiative is addressing unmet needs in the market, particularly in terms of air tightness, moisture management and energy efficiency. Chris notes the increasing complexity brought on by stricter building and energy codes. He points out that many issues, such as damage to wood decks and condensation problems, stem from inadequate air tightness and moisture control.
“Our product, SlopeShield, transitions from wall applications to roofing with its permeable vapor retarder technology,” Chris explains. Unlike traditional roofing systems that often lack a continuous air barrier, SlopeShield provides superior moisture control while allowing roofs to seek equilibrium through seasonal cycles.
Chris highlights the versatility of SlopeShield in both new constructions and re-roofing projects. “For new constructions, especially with structural or lightweight concrete, our product can be applied just five days after pouring, creating a controlled environment for the concrete to dry,” he says. This innovation not only speeds up the construction process but also enhances the durability of the roof system.
In re-roofing scenarios, SlopeShield proves equally beneficial. Chris recounts a project where the product resolved a long-standing moisture retention issue, saving the customer approximately $250,000. “This was a roof that had been retaining moisture for years, and within 47 days of applying SlopeShield, the roof was bone dry,” he shares.
Heidi and Chris emphasize that these innovations are not just about improving the technical aspects of roofing but also about offering roofing professionals new ways to set themselves apart from competitors.. “Use this, everyone out there. This is going to differentiate your business,” Heidi encourages.
