In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth spoke to Rich Benninghoff and Rebecca Talbot of Malco Products. One of the big things they focused on in their conversation was building upon Malco’s 75-year long legacy. Rebecca shared, “There is really a lot of emphasis that already has been paved for me to stay the course on, but also room for us to continue to grow.”
Originally, Malco was founded as a sheet metal business. But, they have grown and shifted with the industry over time, as Rich explained, “We were predominantly in the HVAC industry, but halfway through that endeavor, from 1950 to today, the building trades have become a significant part of our business, and specifically the roof, siding, gutter elements of those building trades.” Today, they see themselves as a company that makes tools to cut, bend, shape and fasten metal, whatever form that metal comes in.
As for where they are headed next, one of the things the company plans to focus on is the customer journey. Rebecca explained, “The customer journey in a marketing sense is really used as centric to business, to growth, to revenue growth, namely. But along the lines, it is also inclusive of those things that are important for the business and more broadly to the support of the customer journey from the minute they choose to enter a trade to the minute that they decide to exit.” This includes supporting training programs and making tools accessible — all to make Malco’s customers work easier.
A key part of this is helping customers find the right tool for their job; and building it if there isn’t one in existence already. This culture of innovation and service has always been a part of Malco’s DNA. An example of this is their turbo shears. Rebecca shared, “You want to talk about a history of innovation? One of our top sellers for the RSG market and for HVAC is our TSHD, which is the turbo shear. That is a line that is celebrating 20 years of innovation. There's I believe nine other turbo products that fall under that for a variety of different materials. 20 years expanding upon a category that's been really successful.” Rich added, “We're always being vigilant about things that we could add to the business that would make sense for the end user customer that we're supporting.”
