Do you have homeowners asking for advice on what color shingle they should choose? Most contractors are better equipped to explain why a homeowner should choose a certain shingle over another on a technical level than give our opinion on the best shingle color for the house.
The color of shingle on a roof is a huge part of the home’s curb appeal, so it can be overwhelming for homeowner and contractor alike to properly visualize and articulate what that color should be. For most homeowners, it is likely that this is the first time they have considered this question. As their contractor, there can be a lot of pressure when you are asked to deliver sound advice and guidance on something as subjective as color choice.
Fear not about helping homeowners through this difficult decision, here are a few tips for helping your customer select a shingle color for their home.
It won't make much sense to make the roof color the homeowner's favorite house color if they only plan to live there for one or two more years. If a homeowner is planning to sell soon choosing a neutral roof color can give them more flexibility when it comes time to sell. PABCO’s most popular choices are antique black, pewter gray and weathered wood for this reason — these colors pair well with a variety of house color options. Remind your homeowner that it is easier and less expensive to change a paint color than a roof color.
Do thehomeowners want to add additional curb appeal? Do they want to accentuate their brick facades? Is this home historic?
All of these questions will factor into choosing a shingle that works with their home. Does the homeowner want the roof to be the main visual feature of their home? If so, choosing something like PABCO Prestige® asphalt shingles in Sherwood green or blue slate will make their home pop. Or do they want the roof to complement the home’s style or color scheme? Like using pewter gray shingles to subtly complement their brick house?
Perhaps a homeowner is looking to save energy, which helps them narrow their choices to “cool” asphalt shingles like PABCO’s Premier Radiance® shingles which reflect rays from the sun off the roof.
It is ultimately up to the homeowner, but asking these guiding questions is indubitably helpful in helping them choose a roof color that they will love on their house.
While contractors can visualize a roof and how it will look fairly well after years of experience, most homeowners have a hard time picturing what their new shingles will look like on their roof.
