Guarding against snow fall: Snow retention solutions

RMSG Snow Retention POTW
March 3, 2024 at 3:00 p.m.

By Dani Sheehan.

Help safeguard homeowners in areas with heavy snowfall with a snow retention system. Don’t miss this podcast episode to learn about a variety of options and how they are being used.

Punxsutawney Phil may be predicting an early spring, but for states like Montana, Michigan and the mountains of Colorado, snow is still in the forecast for a few more months. If there’s snow coming down on the roofs you install, it’s worth considering adding a snow retention system. In a recent episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth sits down with Lars Walberg of Rocky Mountain Snow Guards and Nick Pointek of On Point Contracting to talk about snow retention solutions.

Snow retention has increased in popularity over the last few years. As Lars explains, “The reason for that is there's this idea out there that snow slides, if you have a slippery roof, that snow's going to just kind of slide off as the snow falls, and that's not true at all. If you have a slippery roof surface, snow falls, and you get an adhesive bond for a while... And the snow builds up and builds up, and then it all comes off in one fell swoop in an avalanche.”

These avalanches can be dangerous, and Nick sees a lot of his customers coming to him after they’ve experienced that first avalanche, wanting a solution to combat the problem from reoccurring. He tells us a little bit about the process: “Rocky Mountain Snow Guards has a great free program that creates these architectural snow retention plans, and we can send them the engineering specs or a satellite measurement of the roof, and they're able to put together a detailed plan for us. They consider the snow loads for the region, type of roof, pitch, roofing materials, size of each facet and other factors.”

From there, it's as easy as following the instructions they provide, giving contractors and homeowners peace of mind knowing they’re working with professionals who understand the systems and really know what they’re talking about when recommending solutions to their customers.
