2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (SPFA) and they’re excited to celebrate at their SprayFoam Convention in March! To prepare, Megan Ellsworth met with Richard “Rick” Duncan, their executive director, for this episode of Roofing Road Trips® to talk about what to expect.
A driving force behind SPFA when it was created back in 1973 was building learning opportunities. Rick explained, “Our contractors really need to learn more about new technology. We've carried that into what we do with our show, and that is to promote education.” The show, which takes place March 3-6, 2024, in Las Vegas, has multiple events and programs that support this goal.
One of these is their professional certification programs, which are highlighted in the first two days before presentations begin on March 5. Rick described this, saying, “Expert presenters across the industry do presentations, and then we have our trade show. We come back the next day and do a similar program with three educational sessions followed again by the trade show." They are excited for this to create spaces to facilitate learning in all forms, both traditional presentations and on the floor networking with people.
By creating this type of learning space, SPFA is excited to see what news and innovations get brought to the convention. Rick is expecting some interesting new equipment. He explained that the industry is shifting rapidly right now, saying, “We went from simple proportioner machines that apply the foam to sophisticated, computer-operated systems. There are also new products in terms of the spray foam and coatings themselves.”
Even as the show celebrates the future of the industry, they are not forgetting to honor the past, especially with it being their anniversary! Rick mentioned there being some history on display with SPFA bringing the first commercially available spray foam machines. They’re also bringing a historic advertisement book, and Rick explained their reasoning, saying, “We want to recognize new honorary members of the SPFA that are some of the early pioneers of the industry.”
