Garrett Kurtt and Jessi West Gunteski - New Technology for Building Code Information

Garrett Kurtt Podcast
August 17, 2021 at 11:00 a.m.

By Colin Sheehan, RCS Reporter.

Learn how this progressive tech company was founded and how it helps contractors with their building code headaches.

In Season 3, Episode 40 of Roofing Road Trips, Heidi J. Ellsworth visits with Garrett Kurtt, CEO and Founder of OneClick Code and Jessi West Gunteski, OneClick Code’s director of marketing and PR. A member of the Colorado Roofing Association (CRA), this tech company brings 12 years of experience in the roofing restoration industry. In the podcast, Heidi and Garrett discuss his experience in roofing and how he understands the time and resource challenges associated with finding the right roofing codes, sales tax information, manufacturer specifications, permit fees and jurisdictional authority.

"I stumbled into the industry,” said Garrett who has been in roofing for 13 years now. “I started off power washing and helping floods that hit [near] my grandparents in Iowa, [and] flood work is not great. It's dirty. It's short-term.”

A true entrepreneur, Garret realized that people have been able to make fortunes from starting their own roofing company. He understood that flood restoration was not a sustainable way to make a living, so he moved to Colorado to enjoy the sunshine and start a business.

“I've been here for 11 years now and I've done thousands of roof estimates. I've also become pretty well-known in the industry here, locally, doing appraisal work, as well as doing supplemental estimates on commercial projects,” said Garret. “I have right now, probably over 500 appraisals under my belt. And I've even been called into, as an expert witness, on insurance claim disputes here in Colorado."

Jessi started at OneClick Code a year and a half ago and used to be a wedding planner before entering the roofing industry.

“Garrett and I became pretty close and I joined the team,” said Jesse. “I am excited to be here, but roofing is relatively new to me. So, Garrett has been a great mentor [in] understanding the industry, since he has seen all sides of it.”

Garrett used to work 14-hour days making claims for both the supplementing and production side of the industry. He was doing the same processes over and over again when he decided to ask the simple question: How can we automate?

"I'm a systems guy,” said Garrett. “So, [I started asking] how can we put the process in place so we don't have to continue explaining what a roof should cost? And I realized that whoever can figure out how to do that, would be on their way to be able to help with the estimation process. And so, I set out probably four years ago to figure out the building codes to help contractors across the country.”

OneClick Code doesn’t focus just on contractors though, they also serve adjusters and manufacturers. Providing the information and documentation that everyone needs to find out about building codes specific to their jurisdiction, and to get their claims closed, that was the real challenge OneClick set out to solve.

“We're seeing all of these different groups of people who are being stuck by these manual and outdated systems, because they're either gathering inaccurate information or they're gathering information and they can't back it up,” said Jessi. "By compiling all of the building codes and jurisdiction data from across the U.S., we're really saving people massive amounts of time. So when you get on a roof, we can save you an hour because you're not calling the municipality. you're not emailing them back and forth. You're not battling over with the adjuster over who's right.”

OneClick Code eliminates the friction between contractors and adjusters because, through OneClick Code, both parties have access to the correct information. From the insurance side, OneClick helps contractors' and homeowners' close claims quickly and accurately, so they can get back to their lives.

“At the end of the day, what we're trying to do, is just serve our customers,” said Jessi.

"If you can become nationwide, you will become very relevant to all contractors and insurance companies,” added Garrett. “And if insurance companies like it, contractors will like it. And if they both like it, it will be a solution that will hopefully change the industry. And that's what we set out to do.”

Listen to the entire podcast to hear how OneClick Code provides solutions for roofing companies across the nation.
