Finding optimism in the face of industry challenges

Metal era Hickman Finding optimism in the face of industry challenges
July 28, 2024 at 12:00 p.m.

By Jesse Sanchez.

Regardless of past difficulties, this industry leader shares their thoughts on pushing onward towards a successful roofing future.

In a recent episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth and Brad Van Dam of MTL Holdings, parent company of Metal-Era and Hickman Edge Systems, chatted at the 2024 International Roofing Expo (IRE) in Las Vegas. The importance of Brad's work with the Single Ply Roofing Industry (SPRI) and his opinions on the condition of the roofing business today are the main focus of this episode.

Brad shares his journey from flooring contractor to roofing industry leader, highlighting his role in the growth of MTL Holdings. "I went from the ground to the ceiling and joined MTL Holdings...to help essentially a family business and continue their growth path," he explains. Over the past decade, MTL Holdings has expanded from 50 to 300 employees, a testament to their success and commitment to the industry.

The conversation shifted to SPRI, an organization dedicated to advancing the technical aspects of single-ply roofing. Brad praises SPRI’s collaborative spirit, where competitors work together to improve industry standards. "They find common ground on an issue and then work together to try to advance that code position," he says, expressing the importance of unity in progress.

Despite challenges, Brad is optimistic about the industry's future, like inventory fluctuations and labor shortages, he believes the sector is poised for growth. "History has shown that when we've had a tough time...the industry bounces back," he notes. He cites the Bureau of Labor's construction labor reports, indicating a return to pre-COVID levels, as a positive sign for 2024.

Brad describes the role of innovation in driving the industry forward. MTL Holdings' investment in robotics and automation aims to enhance productivity without sacrificing jobs. "We believe that we'll be able to upskill those folks...to help fund our growth," he explains. This technological advancement not only addresses labor shortages but also positions the company for future success.

Brad encourages embracing prefabricated parts to streamline on-site work and attract new talent. "It's important...to be thinking about in 2024...how are you making it easier on the roof so you're attracting more people," he advises.
