Advancing technology can sometimes be hard to keep up with. In the most recent episode of Roofing Road Trips, Heidi J. Ellsworth joins Kevin Carfa of SRS Distribution who leads their Roof Hub technology. They sit down to discuss the advantages of technology in the roofing industry and how investing in company technology stacks can improve business and streamline workflows. It’s never too late to transform into digital organizations, and they show you just how easy it is.
With Roof Hub, SRS Distribution has created a digital ecosystem that not only takes orders for roofing, but also provides digital services to customers throughout the life of their projects. Kevin joined the SRS team not even a year ago but has been in digital his entire career. The industry has already started on this journey to shift to digital, and Kevin wants to help provide contractors with the resources and knowledge to be successful. He says, “It can be just an efficiency gain for them to grow their business faster. How can I utilize my resources differently, where maybe somebody who was taking notes and scheduling trucks out can now be focused a little bit more on lead generation and selling.”
Anecdotally, Kevin and Heidi both agree that the roofing companies that are adopting technology seem to be differentiating themselves across the business. But more so than simply adopting one new technology, the greatest success comes from the integration of technology into every aspect of the business. As Kevin explains, “Everybody has multiple apps that are all purpose built for different things, but when they’re not talking to each other, it almost becomes an operational burden because now...[for example] from the procure side as a distributor, you’re having to key an order into an estimating tool that then gets keyed into a CRM so you can deploy a crew, and then gets keyed into a purchasing tool with a distributor.” If instead you can use technology to ensure each part of the process is talking to each other, you improve overall efficiency while reducing redundancies and human error at every step.
The key is to audit your business to see where there are gaps and what improvements need to be made. While Kevin is all for digital transformation, he says, “The worst thing you could actually do in a digital transformation is build something or integrate with something for the sake of checking a box...These have to be done for strategic reasons...[and] you really have to start with, all right, what’s the business problem that I’m trying to solve?”
