Joining an association can be extremely beneficial to your roofing business and help you gain opportunities and connections. And a great association like the Arizona Roofing Contractors Association (ARCA) shows the whole industry why. On a recent episode of Roofing Road Trips, host Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Jennifer George, who is the director of ARCA, to discuss some of the great things that the association has to offer.
After COVID, ARCA became committed to offering more in-person courses for their members. Jennifer explains that one of the things they did is, “Hosted and expanded our academy classes, which brought in new facilitators, specializing in the product and material that was featured.”
While offering additional training courses is helpful to keep people in the industry, ARCA also recognizes that it is hard to keep the workforce steady. “I would say our top goal is to keep everyone on the roof safe, to continue to provide educational and informational training and webinars, as well as cultivate ways to increase the workforce efforts, and I know that's probably nationwide, but in Arizona we have a hard time finding the workforce and then keeping it,” says Jennifer.
There are a few different ways ARCA is combating workforce retention. “We are partnering with the Veteran Affairs and then keeping an eye out for additional opportunities,” Jennifer explains. “In 2023, ARCA, along with NRCA will be launching the first SkillsUSA competition in Arizona with the objective to send at least one student to the national event. And also new this year, we are trying to have participation in the Let's Build Girls Camp, which will be introducing females the ages of eight to 16 to the roofing industry. So again, our primary focus would be safety and I think workforce.”
