Creating a Company Culture for Everybody

SRS Distribution creating company culture
September 22, 2022 at 6:00 a.m.

By Cass Jacoby.

Learn how this company’s culture pledge empowers employees to celebrate their uniqueness and speak up when something doesn’t align with company values.

RCS President Heidi J. Ellsworth travels to Texas in Season 4, Episode 26 of the Roofing Road Trips Podcast, to talk with SRS Distribution’s EVP/Chief Human Resource Officer Carrie David. Grab a cup of coffee and tune in to learn about the SRS culture pledge and how it has helped maintain their extraordinary culture that has changed expectations of employees throughout roofing, even as the company expands.

SRS is known for an extraordinary culture, and their pledge is a huge part of how they invest in their employees and solidify what they believe in and how they treat each other. Characteristics like integrity, courage and commitment have long been a part of why SRS has such a strong culture. Part of staying true to that culture also includes bringing in diversity and inclusion into their leadership training.

“It really is about coming as you are, bringing your whole self, but then as colleagues, whether you manage people or not, having that courage to stand up and point out when something is not right and doesn't adhere to our values in our culture pledge, or just making sure that you're going that extra mile to make everyone feel included,” says Carrie. “With courageous leadership training, what I find especially impactful is we really teach people that being silent is actually offensive and harmful to the organization. When you see something wrong, you need to speak up, you need to have that courage, even if it's super uncomfortable.”

These initiatives are part of what makes SRS so special. In addition to the pledge, SRS has launched five employee resource groups to ensure that underrepresented and diverse employees can speak up to build a greater culture of inclusivity and pull focus to areas where the culture of the company can grow stronger.

“We have a group that focuses on our Latinos, on our Blacks, on our women, on our pride group, and then lastly, our veterans. I would imagine that we will have more groups as time goes, but we've right now just started with the basics and try to build out what those employee resource groups could do in terms of support, representation, bringing a voice and then helping with mentoring.”
