RCS Influencer Trent Cotney says there are a variety of consultants in the roofing space.

Editor's note: The following is the transcript of a live interview with RCS Influencer Trent Cotney. You can read the interview below or listen to the podcast.

Intro: Hello everybody. I'm Alex from RoofersCoffeeshop.com and I am here with Trent Cottney for our October influencer question. How are you, Trent?

Trent Cotney: Good, Alex. How are you doing?

Alex: Good. So our October question is, when should roofing contractors use consultants and what are the questions they should be asking?

Trent Cotney: Yeah, so I've always been a big believer in surrounding myself with people that are a lot smarter than I am, which isn't very difficult, but consultants are a great way to do that. So there are a variety of consultants in the roofing space. There are the consultants that you would use on projects, so let's say you get in a dispute with your customer. Sometimes you need a third party to look at things and say, "Hey, this is right or this is wrong," and help convince the customer of that. So they're useful there.

There are other consultants, like our good friend John Kenny over at Cottney Consulting that can assist with operations and estimating and things like that and help you run your business. There's a variety of consultants out there that do things like that as well as sales consultants. And I think it's useful. I think the questions you should ask are what are this person's credentials? What are past reviews? Do they have other people that you know have used them and recommend them? And everything in construction, whether it's roofing or other trades, it's still a lot based on reputation and who you know. So that's what I would recommend. Definitely recommend using them when you hit that wall, that sometimes when you meet somebody else to kind of help you get past that hurdle.

Alex: Definitely. And it's okay to ask for help and you might as well take advantage of the resources that are out there.

Trent Cotney: Yeah, absolutely. I did that all the time. Back when I had my own law firm I needed all the help I could get. So I was constantly looking for advice and help within the industry and outside the industry to help make the business better.

Alex: Perfect. Well thank you so much Trent, and we will catch everybody on the November Influencer.

Outro: Thank you.
