Conjoined Geodesic Roof Replacement Wins Award

ARMA Geodesic Dome
December 10, 2021 at 3:00 p.m.

By Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA).

The complex roof replacement done by Wedge Roofing wins bronze in the 2021 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards Program.

When the Hardy Residence was in need of a new roof for their Pacific Northwestern coastal home, they searched for someone who could take on the complex project. To complete the project of replacing their geodesic dome roof, they hired Wedge Roofing, a local contractor with over four decades of experience in dome roofing. The project went on to win the bronze award in the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) 2021 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards Program.

Coastal environments: rugged beauty and complexity

A geodesic dome on its own can present a bevy of challenges to even the most experienced and skilled roofing contractor. The Hardy Residence doubles that; two, conjoined geodesic domes, perched high on an ocean bluff, where gale-force winds are not uncommon. The Hardy Residence is located on the Pacific Northwest Coast, only a couple of hundred feet from the Pacific Ocean. The homeowner wanted to replace the roofing on the geodesic dome structure but wanted to ensure the protection of the pristine coastal land surrounding the residence.

Wedge Roofing tackled this complex project with resourcefulness and skill. Due to the proximity of salt spray and the possibility of gale-force winds, special consideration was taken when selecting materials. Throughout the roof, there was damaged wood in need of repair and replacement, as well as the removal of the existing roof material. A GAF Timberline® HD roofing system with a Class A fire rating was selected for the job.

Challenges of roofing a geodesic dome

The Geodesic Dome has a unique and irregular structure, a group of triangles bolted together. Each triangle is a separate item with a bottom, two diminishing sides and a top. Each of these angles must be taken into consideration when replacing the roof of a dome. Triangular pitches inherent to domes can be difficult to navigate, and they can also make planning complicated because all conventional roofing material is manufactured as squares or rectangles. A dome project also has the added complexity of requiring roofing material for each triangle to be cut in the field. In total there were 94 individual roof sections, each needing to be meticulously integrated with its surrounding puzzle pieces.

The bold design of a geodesic dome is the perfect canvas to paint the versatility, longevity and stunning visual qualities of an asphalt shingle. In addition to the inherent complexity of the job, Wedge Roofing needed to complete the job before the arrival of new owners. Wedge’s shingle roofing specialists installed the roof on time, leaving the Geodesic dome in pristine condition for its new owners to enjoy.

Wedge Roofing is a multiple award-winning GAF Master Elite Contractor in the San Francisco Bay Area. Wedge’s four decades of demonstrated roof expertise, renowned customer service and ethical business practices have earned their reputation as one of the best roofing companies nationwide, and the only Bay Area roofing company to receive the industry’s most prestigious accreditations and awards.

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) named Wedge Roofing the 2021 Bronze Winner in the Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards Program for its work on this project. Chosen by a panel of industry experts and media members, the showcased asphalt roofing’s key qualities: durability, weather resistance and style. The Hardy Residence is now a permanent part of ARMA’s online winner’s gallery.
