Celebrating Homes For Our Troops

Coffee Conversations - Roofing & Homes For Our Troops - Sponsored by ABC Supply
May 4, 2022 at 6:00 a.m.

By Cass Jacoby, RCS Reporter.

RCS goes deeper into how Homes for Our Troops is changing veterans’ lives in an emotional Coffee Conversations.

In this Coffee Conversation, sponsored by ABC Supply, Heidi Ellsworth sits with Brigadier General USA (RET) and CEO of Homes for Our Troops Tom Landwermeyer  as well as Elizabeth Evans for a discussion about Homes For Our Troops, a nonprofit dedicated to building and donating specially adapted custom homes nationwide for severely injured post-9/11 Veterans, enabling them to rebuild their lives. Further, the two talk about ABC Supply's core values of Give Back and American Pride and about getting involved in helping veterans' organizations like Homes For Our Troops.

“I graduated West Point in 1976, went into the army, started out as an armor officer, did that for about five years and became a helicopter pilot. I finished up in 2009 and retired as a brigadier general, working in the Pentagon,” says Tom introducing himself.  “I really wanted to get into the nonprofit sector, spent a couple years as a civilian in the Pentagon, trying to cross over, and finally got hired with the Armed Services YMCA for about five years as their COO. In January 2017, I got lucky enough to be selected to be president/CEO of Homes For Our Troops. And so I've been doing this job for a little over five years.”

Elizabeth Evans similarly ended up at West Point, where she found her love for construction, majored in civil engineering, and worked for several different companies before transitioning from the active army in 2005 to the Florida National Guard. “Homes for our Troops really are interested in the veteran wanting to get back engaged with their community,” says Eizabeth.  "I can't say enough great things about Homes For Our Troops. And I'm really excited for other roofers to get partnered and involved with their work.”

“We couldn't do it without them,” says Tom. Tom says that for any roofer looking to get further involved, he recommends “getting on our website, there you will see  a map that shows where all of our projects have been and all the ones that are currently in progress. And if you’ve got some in your area, you can click on those,  contact us, and we can put you in touch with the builder.”

Ultimately Homes for Our Troops is about enabling the veteran, restoring their freedom and independence, which in turn gives the rest of the family so much more time and a way get back to normal.

Read, Listen or Watch the entire Coffee Conversation to learn more about Homes for Our Troops and how you and your business can get involved with giving back to veterans.
