In a recent episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth meets up with Steve Little to talk about building a successful and secure roofing company today. Steve, along with partners Keith Post and Jayne Williams, began KPost Roofing and Waterproofing 20 years ago. They began with a hope for a $6- or $10 million-dollar company with around 100 employees, but things have snowballed from that original goal, as Steve explained “this year we will close out 2023 with 430 employees on the commercial side and a little under $92 million as a company. And we started a residential division six years ago, and that will close out this year around $16 million and we just picked up the Tesla Solar Roof program.”
How have they grown so far beyond their original vision? Good partners, employees and an understanding of the complexities and intricacies of the roofing industry. Steve elaborated, “The reality is that you have to know where you want to go before you can begin." The industry is full of shifting elements, especially today with immigration and regulations being such hot topics. Steve’s advice for navigating this was, at the very beginning of your business, "figuring out where you want to go, building a plan that you can measure by and have smart goals by, and then starting to understand what you can and can't do, what your skills are and how to surround yourself with the right people.” This includes experts in the roofing industry, but it is also crucial to go beyond the roofing industry, to find experts in adjacent fields, such as legal or management, to help you navigate the increasingly interconnected industry.
