An entrepreneur’s success story

Johns Manville An entrepreneur’s success story
July 14, 2024 at 12:00 p.m.

By Jonny Suchor.

Learn about Weather Shield’s development, company culture and the impact of the Entrepreneurial Operating System from an industry expert.

In an episode of Stories from the Roof, Megan Ellsworth from RoofersCoffeeShop® interviews Jim Bush, the visionary CEO of Weather Shield Roofing Systems. Jim shares his remarkable journey of founding the company in 1980 at age 19, reflecting on his entrepreneurial beginnings.

“I had kind of an entrepreneurial seizure... I thought, well, I’ve got at least six months of experience working summers, I should be able to do this. And young and dumb, there’s the entrepreneurial seizure part. I decided I would start a company,” Jim says.

Jim recounts his early days of knocking on doors to find roofing jobs, emphasizing perseverance and the importance of building a solid work ethic. He would borrow a neighbor's ladder, tie it to his car and approach potential clients with determination. His hustle eventually paid off, leading to the growth of Weather Shield Roofing Systems.

Jim highlights the value of people and company culture, saying, "If we take care of our people, our people will take care of our customers." This philosophy extends to his leadership approach, where he stresses the importance of valuing employees, fostering personal and professional development and creating a supportive work environment.

Jim shares his experience with implementing the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), which he credits for significantly improving his business operations. "The biggest thing people say when they do this is not that it made my business better. It did that, but it changed my life," he explains.

As for advice for new entrepreneurs, Jim urges them to seek help and utilize available resources instead of relying only on themselves. His successful journey shows the power of perseverance, valuing people and the benefits of continuous learning and adaptation in business.

Jim emphasizes, “The core of our business has grown out of that value for people. We simply want to do business as blessing, and business as blessing starts at home.”
