4th of a Five Generation Roofing Company Shares What to Look for in a Valuable Employee

Having a strong team behind you is invaluable for making your business thrive. Veteran roofer, Tim Brown Jr., shed some light on what to look for when building your team. 

A company is only as strong as their team behind it, and Tim Brown Jr. of RGS Exteriors knows that better than anyone. Tim is the fourth  patriarch of five generations in the roofing industry and has worked in the industry his whole life. That’s why, when he was asked what to look for in an employee or coworker on an episode of Stories from the Roof, he had an answer locked and loaded.  

Tim answered the question for two different focusses in the industry. For office staff, what he looks for in an employee is “someone that's prompt, someone that shows up on time [and] someone that's personable.” In an installer, he is looking for someone who is, “loyal, someone that works hard and someone that sees [the] value in what you bring. I think with our company, we want the best of the best, [and] there's a very high standard. But because of that, we also pay the best.” 

In any field, the employee is often left with the short end of the stick and is not always treated with the most respect. Tim added that when you’re looking for an employer, you need to find one “that's a team player, that will work hard and that will put [other’s] needs above their own.” This is certainly a culture that Tim promotes at his company. “I think something that we preach a lot in our company is our culture. We want people that want to be there. We want to have people that want to help out. And it's amazing and really powerful to watch that. And when you see somebody helping somebody else, it's awesome.”
