Many companies struggle with high employee turnover, leading to disruptions, reduced productivity and increased company costs. In a recent episode of MetalTalk®, Heidi J. Ellsworth hosted Luke McCormack from McCormack Partners to discuss the challenges in recruiting and retaining skilled workers in the roofing industry. They identified the top reasons employees leave and gave actionable insights into how to start addressing these issues – starting with job ad posting.
One of the primary reasons employees choose to leave is stagnation. According to Luke, when a company isn’t growing – whether that’s due to a lack of hiring or not expanding its operations – employees begin to feel stuck. “If you’re not growing, you’re not evolving. You’re moving backwards,” Luke shared. Workers want to be part of a dynamic, forward-moving team. If they see competitors investing in new hires and professional development, they’re likely to jump ship for what they perceive to be the winning team.
Additionally, life happens, and when it does, employees often reassess their priorities. Whether it’s the birth of a child, the loss of a loved one or a significant career milestone, these events can prompt someone to seek change. Luke advised, “When someone’s gone through that life change, you truly need to be there to support them.” Companies that fail to provide the necessary support during these pivotal moments risk losing valuable employees.
The final major factor driving employees away is poor management or a toxic work environment. As Luke put it, “People don’t leave bad companies, they leave bad bosses.” Employees who clash with their managers or feel out of place in the company culture are unlikely to stay long-term.
So, how can you begin addressing these retention problems? It starts with your job ad strategies. Luke explained that most companies miss the mark by focusing too much on what they want from candidates instead of what they can offer to them. “This ad is your opportunity to differentiate yourself,” he said. “So, when you're writing your job ad, don't write it the same as every other company out there. Write in the job ad what is unique about your company that would attract this candidate. Is it the growth that you've been through? Is it the fact that you give this flexibility, you pay above market rate? Maybe it's the values of your organization.”
