A sign that signifies answered prayers greeted Derek Ingram at his front door. The sign read, “Giving back to those who served,” and in this case, it was a heartfelt gesture for Ingram, a U.S. Army veteran. Ingram, who served in 1974, moved to Maryland a few years ago. His Maryland home now had roof damage, resulting in leaks at the back of the house.
Ingram sought several quotes for a new roof, but all the estimates were beyond his budget. During this trying period, he prayed, hoping his roof would hold up long enough to avoid further damage until he could find a solution. Ingram’s situation took a hopeful turn when he discovered Habitat for Humanity’s initiative aimed at helping veterans receive new roofs. He completed and submitted an application and soon received the wonderful news that he had been chosen and that his roof replacement would be covered at no cost!
On a Friday morning, a group of men who resembled an army platoon arrived at Ingram’s home, ready to replace the roof. Tyler Scott, the COO of Scott’s Roofing, was on-site and explained that Habitat for Humanity had reached out to Owens Corning’s Roof Deployment Program. This initiative coordinates with platinum installers, such as Scott’s Roofing, to provide free roof installations for veterans and those in need. In an interview with Ocala StarBanner, Scott described the effort as a way “to give back to the community.”
Ingram, reflecting on the process which took three months, expressed that he felt “overwhelmed and thankful.” By the end of that remarkable Friday, Ingram had a brand-new roof over his head. With the leaks now a thing of the past, he looked forward to rainy days with a sense of peace and security. The new roof not only provided protection from the elements but also restored his comfort and confidence in his home.
