When should roofing contractors use roofing consultants, and what questions should they ask?

When should roofing contractors use roofing consultants, and what questions should they ask?

RCS Influencer John Kenney says contractors should consider using a consultant when tackling complex projects.

I know that there are times when roofing contractors can significantly benefit from the advice and expertise of an independent roofing consultant. A roofing consultant is an impartial professional who provides expert guidance on roofing systems, materials and installation processes. Unlike suppliers or installers, they are not involved in selling products, allowing them to offer objective recommendations tailored to the specific needs of a project. But when is it most beneficial to bring in a roofing consultant, and what should you ask to ensure they fit your needs?

When to use a roofing consultant

  1. Complex or specialized projects: Roofing projects can vary significantly in scope and complexity. Working with a roofing consultant can be invaluable for projects that involve unique challenges — such as historical restorations, high-rise buildings or intricate roofing systems. They bring in-depth knowledge of various roofing materials and techniques, ensuring the selection of the most suitable system for the building's requirements.
  2. Quality assurance and inspections: Ensuring the roofing system is installed correctly and meets quality standards is essential. Roofing consultants can act as an extra layer of quality control, conducting inspections at various stages of installation. They can identify potential issues early, reducing the risk of costly repairs or later rework.
  3. Cost-effective decision making: Roofing consultants can help building owners and contractors make informed decisions about cost-effective roofing solutions. They can recommend materials and designs that provide long-term value by assessing the building's needs, environment and budget. They can also assist in creating detailed project specifications to avoid unnecessary expenses.
  4. Addressing roof failures or repairs: If a roof has failed prematurely or is experiencing recurring issues, a roofing consultant can conduct a thorough evaluation to determine the cause of the problems. Their unbiased assessment can guide you toward the right repair or replacement approach, ensuring the problem is resolved effectively.
  5. Assistance with compliance and regulations: Roofing projects must comply with local building codes, safety regulations and warranty requirements. Roofing consultants stay current with industry standards and regulations, ensuring your project meets all necessary guidelines. This can be especially helpful when dealing with warranties or insurance claims.
  6. Project oversight and management: A roofing consultant can oversee larger or more complex projects to ensure everything stays on track. They can act as a liaison between the contractor, building owner and other stakeholders, facilitating clear communication and managing expectations throughout the project.

Key questions to ask when hiring a roofing consultant

1 - What is your experience in the roofing industry?

Roofing consultants should have extensive experience in the roofing industry, including knowledge of various roofing systems, materials and installation methods. Ask about their background, certifications and the types of projects they have worked on in the past. Look for consultants from recognized industry associations like the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC).

2 - Do you have specific experience with projects like mine?

Not all roofing consultants specialize in every type of roofing system or building structure. Ask whether they have experience with your project's specific roofing materials, building types or challenges. A consultant with direct experience will be better equipped to provide tailored advice and solutions.

3 - Can you provide references or case studies?

Request references or case studies from previous projects they've consulted on. Speaking with past clients can give insight into the consultant's reliability, quality of work and ability to deliver on their recommendations.

4 - What services do you offer?

Clarify the consultant's services, such as inspections, design recommendations, project management or post-installation evaluations. Understanding their scope of services will help you determine if they can meet your specific project needs.

5 - How do you approach problem-solving?

Ask about their methodology for assessing roofs and providing recommendations. A reputable roofing consultant will systematically evaluate roofing systems, identify potential issues and offer cost-effective solutions based on industry best practices.

6 - What is your fee structure?

Roofing consultants typically charge for their services based on the project's scope, complexity or duration. Ask for a detailed breakdown of their fee structure to understand the costs involved and ensure it aligns with your budget.

7 - How will you measure project success?

Establishing clear expectations for project outcomes is vital. Ask how the consultant will evaluate the project's success, whether through quality assurance checks, adherence to specifications or achieving cost and time objectives.

Roofing consultants offer an independent perspective that can significantly enhance roofing projects' quality, efficiency and success. Contractors should consider using a consultant when tackling complex projects, ensuring quality assurance, managing repairs or seeking expert guidance on cost-effective solutions. By asking the right questions about their experience, services, problem-solving approach and fee structure, you can choose a roofing consultant who will provide valuable support and contribute to the successful completion of your project.
