Volunteers Trade Computers for Hammers

Estimating Edge Volunteers Trade Computers for Hammers
May 26, 2020 at 6:00 a.m.

 By Lauren White, RCS Reporter.

Employees spent a day out of the office installing sheathing on a rooftop.

Estimating Edge is a team of tradesmen and software experts, building cutting-edge estimating and takeoff software for use in the construction industry.  With a desire to get involved and give back to the community, Estimating Edge rolled up their sleeves and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity of Palm Beach County to help build a roof.

“Habitat for Humanity of Palm Beach County partners with families in need to build affordable homes together,” according to Vice President of Marketing Tami Zimmel.  Before being eligible to purchase their own home, Habitat partner families must complete a minimum of 400 “sweat equity” hours of labor.  When these homes are purchased, they have a 30-year, no profit, no interest loan.  Through this process, and with community support, Habitat homeowners gain strength, stability and independence, building a better life for themselves and their families

Estimating Edge chose to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity because the organization closely aligns with construction.  This gave the employees at Estimating Edge, many of whom are former tradespeople, an opportunity to use their skills.  The work was enjoyable and rewarding not only to the employees, but also to the homeowner.

The morning they volunteered, the Estimating Edge team was met by the project organizer and site manager.  Each volunteer group has one specific task, which allows the site manager to ensure everything is done correctly.  Together, the group of employees helped install the sheathing on the roof.  Tami shared, “Since many employees on our team have done this before we were able to accomplish more than a typical volunteer.”

These software experts regularly provide the roofing industry with valuable technology, and now they have provided a homeowner with a roof above her head.  Tami stated, “We feel strongly about supporting our community and are honored to be a part of this program.  It was a great experience for our team and we are looking forward to more participation in the future.”
