Looking for ways to expand your roofing business? Have you thought about adding additional services like siding and other exterior options? In the most recent episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth sits down with Steve and Randy Kruse to discuss the benefits of offering services for the full exterior of a home. Not only is siding the perfect match for roofing, but it can help you obtain loyal and long-term customers to expand your business.
The Kruse Brothers’ family has been in the siding business since 1975 and eventually wanted to get away from working for someone else and started their own business. Steve shares, “We decided that we wanted to go in more of a teaching role and that blossomed into what the Kruse Brothers is today – teaching, taking that knowledge that we have, seeing things on the job site that are working and helping others.”
When it comes to advice on tips and tricks for getting into the siding business, Randy suggests, “First and foremost, there’s already a contract established when you’re a roofing contractor. It always starts with sales products, what you take into the home, selling those products to that homeowner. Similarly, understanding and writing up a contract that includes a warranty, your labor, your material, your profit overhead, all of that, which are familiar processes already.”
Steve agrees and says that one of the pitfalls is when roofing contractors add siding to their businesses without knowing the products they’re selling. He adds, “Just as a roofer has a specified brand to use, if you are choosing and you’re going to become a siding contractor, make sure you choose a product and become knowledgeable about that product. Then stick to your guns and know those products to offer the homeowner in the same way that they would with their roofing products.”
