The rise of textured coatings

Akzonobel The rise of textured coatings
November 9, 2024 at 6:00 p.m.

By Jesse Sanchez.

Textured coatings combine aesthetic appeal with durability for modern building design.

In this episode of CoatingsCast, Megan Ellsworth hosts Amanda Paterline from AkzoNobel to discuss the growing popularity of textured coatings in metal roofing and sidewall applications. As the commercial marketing manager for AkzoNobel’s coil and extrusion business unit, Amanda provides valuable insights into how these coatings are changing the landscape of building materials.

"Textured coatings have a stipple or wrinkle effect that is primarily formed as the result of different materials within the paint coating," Amanda explains. Unlike traditional coatings, these textures are built into the paint itself, providing a distinctive appearance that is both visible and tactile. The use of these coatings has grown significantly in recent years, particularly in the metal roofing industry.

One of the standout products from AkzoNobel is the CERAM-A-STAR 1050 Frost, which has become widely adopted in the industry. Amanda notes, "What we have really seen, especially in the past few years, has been from the design and aesthetics aspect. There's been a bit of a revolution in building materials with the textured, unique coatings." This trend is being driven by architects and designers looking for ways to make their projects stand out while also ensuring performance and longevity.

Amanda also covers the practical benefits of textured coatings, particularly when it comes to metal roofing. "That can help with masking some imperfections that you see during installation, like oil canning," she says, referring to the slight waviness that can occur in metal surfaces. The textured finish not only improves the appearance but also adds a sense of toughness and durability to the material.

In addition to roofing applications, AkzoNobel is expanding the use of textured coatings in sidewall applications with the introduction of the CERAM-A-STAR 1050 Expression Standard Palette. This product combines the aesthetic depth of printed designs — such as wood grain or stacked stone — with the resilience of textured coatings. As Amanda puts it, "What we've been able to do is harness that resin technology to achieve this in our SMP product line for our print products," giving architects and builders more options for achieving authentic looks while maintaining high performance.
