The Key to Safety is Culture

Tremco podcast safety culture
June 10, 2022 at 6:00 a.m.

By Cass Jacoby, RCS Reporter.

Tremco WTI talks about how leading their safety program “heart first” has taken their performance to the highest of standards

RCS President Heidi J. Ellsworth speaks with Ro Lewis, Tony Kotnik, Morgan Minter and Sarah Panter from Tremco WTI in a Roofing Road Trips episode about how to develop an effective culture of safety.

Tremco WTI believes that safety is the most important part of developing a company culture and makes sure that everyone knows that no matter what, people come first, whether it’s out on the field or in the office, their team wants people to make it home safe and sound at the end of the day. “We had the motto: Lead with Safety,” says Tony. “My team understands that we're here to help them, to protect them, to care for them...It is clear our purpose is felt by the people that we serve.”

He says that he is proud of the culture they have developed, because everyone understands why they talk about safety, why they do what they do and why it is important that they lead with safety. “We value people, we do,” agrees Ro. “All of our efforts are made with people in mind, whether it be solving problems for them or empowering them, which is huge, most importantly, protecting them. I think it has been beneficial for our company because they feel that.”

Ro believes that creating a culture where your team knows that you are their partner and always looking out for them, a culture that is steeped in love and care of one another's health and safety is the most important thing in an organization.

“It's who we are and that's who they are too, which is so awesome,” says Sarah. She says that safety is their culture, it has been from day one.

“Even where we maybe didn't have everything as developed as we do now, we still had a lot of that mentality. We really are for a large company, we really do have that small family type feel,” agrees Morgan. “They care and they want to make sure that everything is done safely. I'm really proud to be a part of what they're doing here. I think it's nothing short of amazing really."
