The importance of bilingual training in the roofing industry

The importance of bilingual training in the roofing industry
August 10, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.

RCS Influencer Allison Woslager says investing in bilingual training and supporting these initiatives can create a more skilled, diverse and cohesive workforce in the roofing industry.

As an employer who markets for the roofing industry, where other languages are commonly used, we understand the significance of bilingual training for enhancing workforce communication and customer interactions. To support our own employees, we cover the cost of language learning apps like Duolingo, allowing team members to improve their language skills at their own pace. Additionally, we recommend use of these tools to clients of ours in the roofing industry as we have seen great success with them.

In addition to this, we recommend a more structured approach to bilingual training within the industry. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Comprehensive language programs: Employers can partner with local educational institutions or language training centers to offer industry-specific language courses. These programs should focus on practical communication skills and relevant vocabulary in the industry. (In Tacoma, Washington - The Tacoma Community House teaches several languages for an extremely low cost.)
  • Onsite language workshops: Regular onsite workshops led by professional language instructors can help employees practice and improve their language skills. Scheduling these during work hours can ensure maximum participation.
  • Peer learning: Establishing a mentorship program where bilingual employees assist their peers in learning a new language can foster a culture of collaboration and mutual support, strengthening team bonds.
  • Leveraging technology: Beyond language learning apps, using virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) tools can provide immersive training experiences. These technologies can simulate real-life job scenarios, allowing employees to practice language skills in a practical context relating to our industry and most commonly used terms on the job site.

Investing in bilingual training and supporting these initiatives can create a more skilled, diverse and cohesive workforce in the roofing industry. In my personal opinion, this would not only enhance job performance but would also improve customer satisfaction and overall business success.
