COO Karen L. Edwards joins United Asphalt’s Josh Willie on the RoofersCoffeeShop® soundstage for a LIVE! interview at the Western States Roofing Contractor Association (WSRCA)’s 2022 Western Roofing Expo!
“We manufacture oxidized roofing asphalts for built up roofs. We've been doing that since 1961. And of course that's an old, time-tested, tried and true roofing method,” says Josh. “So we have all of our information on our oxidized asphalts, our polymer modified asphalt, and our new delivery system, which is our FastPack Box, which the contractors that have used that so far, we've received a lot of really good feedback on that.”
Efficient in every sense of the word, this package design saves contractors time with a faster release and no chopping. The heavy-duty cardboard box carton opens in seconds, saving time for workers to complete projects.
“Most people have been doing commercial built up, hot mop roofing for a long time, they're used to lugging around hundred-pound kegs, and they're used to chopping the asphalt at the kettle, and trying to get the bottoms off the kegs and all that, and it's cumbersome and takes a lot of effort,” says Josh. “They stack really, really easy. And you can take this single 50-pound chunk and load it right into your kettle and you don't have to worry about chopping and lugging around all that extra weight.”
Plus, the FastPack is a 50-pound parcel that is 100% recyclable, eliminating the plastic wraps used in other melt-packs and the metal bottom in traditional cartons. This packaging reduces waste going to landfills and reduces the plastic contributing to having to coke your kettle. Plus, clean-up is a snap when all you have to do is recycle the box.
“Our conversations are driven at people who still have those kettles and letting them know that this is still a viable part of the roofing industry. If you're in commercial roofing, you should look at being in it,” says Josh. “We have seen a decent uptick this year based on shortages. And that's been wonderful. And it's kind of been eye opening, I think, for some of the contractors to realize that there is still money in that side of the roofing industry.”
