This is an incredibly exciting time for the construction industry, and companies like USG are paving the way for implementing sustainable solutions. In an episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Stacy Simpson, sustainability manager at USG, to discuss the increasing demand for greener buildings and what USG is doing to stay ahead of the curve.
Sustainable practices can include everything from promoting less water waste in the office to recycling old materials to finding green solutions in the manufacturing of products. Stacy shares, “We just released the CDPH 01350 certification for Securock® Gypsum-Fiber Roof Board. It's a low VOC emitting product. We just released a Health Product Declaration, which describes the whole product formulation. Then we have had an EPD or the Environmental Product Declaration, which tells about the environmental attributes.” USG Securock® Brand Gypsum-Fiber Roof Board is the whole sustainable package when it comes to roof cover boards, complete with a declare label.
This is something roofing contractors can really use. As Heidi pointed out, they can pull the EPD for Securock® Brand Gypsum-Fiber Roof Board and go to the building owner and say, “Look at how sustainable this is. Look what it’s doing, how much healthier it’s going to be for your building and your tenants.” It’s also important for contractors in their own business models. Stacy shares, “An important part with contractors using it is when building owners want to go for the green building certificate like LEED. Having that experience already makes them a lot more marketable.”
As a contractor, the best thing you can do is use the documents available to you to make sustainable decisions. Stacy concludes, “Nobody can do this alone. It’s going to have to be manufacturers, contractors, architects. It’s going to have to be everybody to make a change.”
