Cotney Construction Law recently developed CCL University, an apprenticeship program with the goal of preparing new associates for practice in construction law and to better serve clients within the roofing industry. While many firms have short-term preparation programs for new associates, Cotney Construction Law took a step beyond the traditional approach and developed a long-term program to maximize attorney knowledge and work product.
The program is geared towards new attorneys but is also open to their senior counterparts who will be able to refine their skills and keep up-to-date on changes in the roofing industry. It is rare to see law school curriculum geared directly toward the nuances found in construction law, making it difficult for new attorneys to learn the law in ways other than through years and years of experience. CCL University provides an expedited path to mastering the various aspects involved in understanding contracts, lien law, and licensing.
CCL University consists of multiple tiers lasting for a term of 1-year, which are further broken down into modules focused on a variety of topics related to the practice of construction law. For example, Tier 1 introduces attorneys to an assortment of modules including lien law, licensing, litigating construction claims, and other basic construction law topics. Each module is taught by experts in respective fields who have hands-on experience in the subject matter. As attorneys progress through the program, the subject matter becomes more complex and focused.
One of the most unique characteristics of CCL University is that it will allow Cotney Construction Law attorneys to learn and apply their newfound knowledge in real time. As associates progress through the program they will hone their legal skills quicker than they would through traditional practice, allowing the firm to remain committed to its progressive nature.
After completion of one year in the program associates will have the same knowledge and experience as that of attorneys at other firms with many more years in practice. As the construction and roofing industries continue to innovate and progress, so should the law firms who support the industries’ success.
Cotney Construction Law’s CCL University is one of many innovative practices the firm has developed to change how the construction industry handles legal, risk and safety challenges.
