Ryan Groth, founder of the Sales Transformation Group, has found a unique connection between sports and the sales world. Ryan talks with Heidi Ellsworth, RoofersCoffeeShop® partner, about how he started his business and how he has used the skills he gained from playing professional baseball and applied them to assist roofing contractors with their sales. His new sales team members share this same connection between sports and sales.
Ryan’s mom and stepdad stepped into the contracting world when Ryan was a teenager, and he’s been exposed to the industry ever since. While he initially pursued his love for baseball and played professionally for a few years, he later found himself in the roofing world. Through networking and his connections he met a commercial roofing contractor who was a great leader and coach. Ryan observed him solving his own sales problems using a system he developed. For the next five years, Ryan and his mentor launched a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software company.
Ryan realized that CRM was one of the ways to solve sales problems, but knew more needed to be done in the roofing industry for it to flourish. He saw the connections between his experience as a professional athlete and the business world, such as working hard, having a desire and commitment to do better, making sacrifices, and implementing proven systems, and began coaching and consulting. After five years of working with people to better their businesses, the Sales Transformation Group was developed.
The Sales Transformation Group focuses on supporting commercial and high-end residential and retail roofing companies. Ryan and his team help contractors, “...through a really systematic, scientific sales approach to help them grow into sales athletes...who can sell value, close effectively, sell consultatively, really build relationships, and have that long-term brand that helps them become number one in their market,” Ryan explains.
New sales professionals, with backgrounds in athletics, have joined the team. Jon Townsend and the team, like Ryan, were able to see the relationship between the skills they gained from competition and the athletic world and translate those to the sales world to help roofing contractors increase their revenue and profitability.
Ryan’s goal is to help companies, “[create] a winning environment and winning culture.” Applying the qualities and disciplines learned in the world of athletics and competition to the sales world has warranted great results for the Sales Transformation Group and their clients. With a company focus of sales training, coaching, and consulting, Ryan and his team are able to help roofing contractors become market leaders.
