Safety First in Wildfire-prone Region

DECRA Shake provided a non-combustible Class A fire-rated solution in this wildfire-prone area of California.

Jay and Beverly Craft own a beautiful home at 7,000 feet on a southern California mountain in Big Bear City. When their 21-year-old home needed a roof replacement, they decided that a metal roof was the best solution. The Crafts have been evacuated from their home in the past due to encroaching wildfires. Wildfires frequently ravage the California mountains and remain a serious safety concern. The Crafts concluded that a Class A fire-rated metal roof was the right choice for their mountain home.

Ironically, California-based DECRA and these California homeowners came together in Illinois at a Menard’s home improvement store. While visiting Illinois, Jay stopped into a Menard’s and discovered DECRA steel shingles. He comes from a building industry background and was determined to do his own research to find the best roofing product. After analyzing the DECRA options in comparison to competitive products, he spoke with a DECRA representative in California. “I was enthused,” Jay says, “My research at the factory gave me comfort.” He was pleased with the company’s longevity and said that the 50-year warranty was a big factor in their decision. “We won’t have to replace the roof ever again,” he says.

Now that the home has its new roof, the Crafts enjoy its energy efficiency. “The fact that the metal roof keeps the house cooler is amazing. Our attic is cooler than the outside air temperature,” Jay adds.

The Craft’s are the first homeowners in their neighborhood to invest in a DECRA stone coated steel roof; but the neighbors are more than curious. So many people stop by to inquire about the roof that Beverly made copies of the DECRA representative’s business cards to hand out when people stop.
