S-5!® ColorGard® Snow Bar system surrounds Flying J Travel Center in Wyoming

Completed in time for the winter 2024/2025 snow season, the new roof on the Flying J Travel Center is ready for non-stop traffic.

Wyoming averages almost 15 feet* (not inches) of snowfall each year. So, when 911 Roofing Solutions was asked to update the roofing system on the Flying J Travel Center #759 in Cheyenne, they knew a sturdy snow retention system needed to be incorporated.

“The old roof lasted 30 years, but had a leaking membrane and needed to be updated,” says Dave Sheppard with 911 Roofing Solutions out of Cheyenne. “To give the massive structure more resiliency and an updated look, a standing seam metal panel roof was specified. There’s parking and foot traffic all around the travel center, so we knew a reliable snow retention system was needed for the building.”

That’s why 911 Roofing Solutions went to their snow retention solution company — Rocky Mountain Snow Guards. For the past five years they’ve used the Colorado-based manufacturer exclusively for their snow guard, fence and bar system needs.

Blending In to help out

Once Sheppard sent the roofing diagram to Rocky Mountain Snow Guards, the company’s experts were able to create a free architectural snow retention plan along with a product takeoff quote. More than 500 lineal feet of S-5!® Unpunched ColorGard® snow bars were recommended with 359 each of S-5!® VersaClip™, S-5!® S Clamp and S-5!®SnoClip™ III pieces.  Standard Charcoal Grey ColorStrips were suggested for insertion into the front slot of the unpunched bars, to complement the color of the metal roof.

“ColorGard dramatically reduces the risks associated with rooftop avalanches,” according to Lars Walberg, president of Rocky Mountain Snow Guards, out of Colorado. “This system maintains the clean, colorful appearance of the roof with perfect color- and finish-matching when strips of actual roof metal are used as the ColorStrip inserts. Alternatively, we offer five colors of precut strips that complement many popular metal roofs.

“Our specifications for the Flying J Travel Center were for 69 ColorGard unpunched bars. The VersaClip accommodates any seam spacing, so holes were not needed. The SnoClip III is an aluminum add-on component that helps impede the mitigatation of snow and ice beneath the ColorGard bar. Together this creates a truly valuable snow retention system."
