RoofPro Stands Up Against Hurricane Irma

Sika RoofPro Hurricane Irma
September 7, 2022 at 6:00 a.m.

By Sika.

Hurricane force winds are no match for the new roof of American University of the Caribbean.

In September of 2017 St. Maarten and the surrounding Caribbean islands were hit hard by Hurricane Irma. The Category 5 storm packed a powerful punch, with winds over 185 mph that caused widespread damage to buildings throughout the area. The American University of the Caribbean, however, only sustained minimal damage. Their Sika Corporation RoofPro membrane did not peel or delaminate — only a few skid marks and scrapes from airborne HVAC equipment were left behind from the intense storm.

While metal roof panels on the adjacent buildings and metal flashings on the AUC building were blown away during Hurricane Irma, the RoofPro membrane in the foreground held fast.

The RoofPro membrane is still well-bonded all around the tear preventing water from getting under the membrane and moving laterally to find a leakage pathway into the building. All damage was easily repaired.
