Learn how this Ohio school went from fearing blow offs to breathing easy with a weathertight roof system.

Administration at the Utica High School in Ohio had been struggling with challenges related to their old standing seam and TPO roof for 15 years, with issues as extreme as a partial blow off. They were concerned for the safety of the students and faculty, especially with Ohio’s winter storms. When All Weather Systems of Hebron, Ohio was brought in to take a look at the roof, they quickly discovered the problem. Mike Tigner, the owner of All Weather Systems, explained, “We found that the clips used to secure the metal panels were spaced every five feet throughout the entire installation. That’s a big problem and we were concerned the whole roof would eventually blow off.”

And so the school officials decided it was time to get the entire roof replaced to ensure it is structurally sound and all the building’s occupants stay safe. All Weather Systems won the bid for the project and started by removing the standing seam metal on the sloped parts of the roof until only the plywood deck remained. Then they made repairs and replacement to the deck that had been damaged in that previous, partial blow-off. After that, they got started on building a new roof. Mike shared, “The 18” EM LokSeam metal panels from EXCEPTIONAL Metals were 92 feet long to accommodate the size of the structure, which made it interesting to get them up on the roof. Luckily the school is a one-story building, so we built scaffolding that allowed us to slide these long panels up and onto the roof without causing any damage. It worked pretty well!”

As for the flat sections of the roof, the 19-person crew placed 3/8” Duro-Guard Fan Fold insulation on the existing TPO and then welded 50 mil Duro-Tuff membrane on top to seal it. The entire project was finished in 12 days over the summer break and the school now has a 20-year weathertight warranty for the metal installation as well as a 20-year NDL warranty for the membrane installation! Mike summed up the project, saying, “There were a lot of people on-site and a lot of moving parts to get this project done in a short amount of time. Having partners like Duro-Last and EXCEPTIONAL Metals are crucial for us on projects like this. It’s one phone call to order everything I need and one delivery so everything is on-site when I need it. It just doesn’t get more efficient than that.”
