Roofing Expert Tips on Profitability, Recruitment and Leadership Training

Carroll Consulting Roofing Expert
September 28, 2023 at 9:00 p.m.

By Adam Cabrera.

Goal setting during these reviews provides employees with a clear career path, contributing to their motivation and job satisfaction.

In a recent episode of Roofing Road Trips®, host Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Richard Carroll, co-founder of the Carroll Consulting Group, to talk about the secrets of building a successful roofing business and key aspects of the roofing industry like recruitment, retention and leadership development.

"The construction industry being so far behind in technology, I think the roofing industry is a perfect example of that," Richard noted, emphasizing the need for companies to adapt to changing industry trends. Whether it's investing in flameless technology or embracing modular construction, staying ahead of the curve can translate into higher profitability.

Moreover, Richard shared that more companies are investing in solar and green roofs, as "the rate of return on those products is starting to pay off."

But what good is cutting-edge technology without a strong team to implement it? Richard laid out actionable steps to recruit and retain talent, emphasizing community involvement, partnerships with educational institutions and social media campaigns.

One tip he offers for the interview process is to get your team involved. “We don’t want 30 people in the interview,” Richard says. “But, we want to get some of the people that really hold your corporate values to be involved in the interview process and get them to buy-in." Involving team members in hiring decisions can contribute to employee retention and improve the overall workplace environment.

When it comes to retaining employees, Richard believes in the power of regular reviews and goal setting. These reviews are not about discipline but about future development. It’s a review of what they're going to do in the next six months, so they can reach their career goals," he said. Offering a clear path for career development helps employees feel valued and motivated, which in turn helps in retaining them.
