Satellite reports make it easier to provide individual intricacies for each roof for a personalized snow retention plan.

Roofers investing in satellite aerial reports get more than just precise roof measurements for their projects. They also have a tool that can quickly result in a free snow retention plan for that same roofing project when sharing the report with Rocky Mountain Snow Guards.

“Satellite roof plans, like those from EagleView™, RoofScope®, and Hover® provide us with essential roof dimensions,” says Brian Cross, manager of sales and marketing at Rocky Mountain Snow Guards. “This includes eave dimensions, eave to peak distance, pitch and project location. The calculations of the distances and pitch are essential for us to create an effective snow retention plan for a specific project.”

Cross explains that it’s not essential to have a satellite report to gain a snow retention plan from his company; however it makes it easier on everyone involved to have one and provides individual intricacies of the roof. “Without an aerial report, a customer will need to provide pitch, eave, rake and area measurements for us to create an effective snow retention plan,” says Cross.

“Here’s an example. A roofer wants snow retention above an entry door. Without roof drawings, we would quote snow retention for just that eave. But, when we look at a plan, we can see that there is a dormer there that sheds its snow onto that slope. Now that we have that specific information, we will adjust the snow retention plan to ensure that the system will work as intended. The aerial report gives us much more information so we can do the best job possible.”

Industry leader in quality

Known for both their speed and accuracy, Rocky Mountain Snow Guards typically creates about 30 full snow retention system designs and layouts each day for residential and commercial projects. This includes takeoff lists, plans and installation instructions. Per year, the company averages about 7,800 quotes.

“We have three full-time staff members who are proficient in full design work and layouts,” says Cross. “Whether we’re talking about a snow retention system for a single family home or a sprawling hospital complex, we can handle any roof layout.”

Personalized attention to detail

Cross relates that many factors go into determining the type of snow retention system that will best suit each individual roof. One of the biggest determining factors is the roof type. For example, a standing seam roof will almost always be assigned a snow fence to avoid penetrations. After that, the roof’s friction coefficient is the next piece of information that gets explored.

“A traditional asphalt roof, because of the granules, will have a high friction coefficient,” says Cross. “This means the snow will not slide easily over the surface. For this type of roof, the most cost effective snow retention solution is individual snow guards.

“For lower friction roofs we look deeper at the location and pitches of the roof. In our experience, in most situations a ‘Soldier Row’ pattern of snow guards can be just as effective as a snow fence. This is more cost effective, so both the roofer and homeowner benefit. However, if we’re looking at a geographic area with a very high snow load, steep pitch and low friction coefficient, then the best solution will most likely be one or more rows of a snow fence. Again, it’s a very individualized process for each roof and the satellite report is essential in providing us key information for each project.”

Appealing aesthetic options

Working with the satellite reports in hand, the Rocky Mountain Snow Guards team strives to create aesthetically pleasing snow retention systems that are cost effective.

“Efficiency is our primary goal for snow retention roof systems,” says Cross. “However, if a customer has a specific look or snow guard they want, we can make that happen. And, of course we offer appealing options of copper, powder-coated steel and aluminum, mill-finish aluminum, plus raw- and zinc-coated steel, all designed to enhance the appeal of the snow retention system.

“From start to finish, we calculate and offer a design on the drawing of the roof to show where the most effective snow retention system is needed. We include the layout for installation along with any pertinent details about the product. Then the installation instructions are included, a list of the products required to get the job done, plus an estimate. It’s a one-stop process that roofers can depend on for reliable, cost effective and safe snow retention systems for their roofing projects.”

Rocky Mountain Snow Guards has offered free architectural snow retention plans, layout and quote services since the company began in 2010. The company manufactures its wide variety of snow guards, snow fences and snow retention systems designed to protect people and property in the United States.
