Revolutionizing roofing safety: 21 years of progress

Certainteeed Revolutionizing roofing safety: 21 years of progress
November 22, 2024 at 3:00 a.m.

By Jesse Sanchez.

Transforming roofing safety by eliminating hazardous tools and practices while offering a secure and efficient solution that meets modern health and safety standards.

In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, host Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Abby Feinstein, director of product management, marketing and sustainability at CertainTeed, to celebrate a milestone: 21 years of Flintlastic SA. The conversation homed in on a single, critical aspect that sets this roofing technology apart — safety.

Flintlastic SA, a self-adhering roofing system, eliminated the traditional hazards associated with roofing installation. Expressing the safety benefits for workers on commercial and residential job sites, Abby noted, “You no longer need a kettle, a flame or hot asphalt to put it down.” The technology replaces dangerous tools and practices with a pressure-sensitive adhesive that’s both efficient and secure.

Abby also discussed how these safety innovations align with modern workplace standards, especially in light of stringent health and safety regulations. “In terms of health and safety, not having the hot kettle, not dealing with 350-degree asphalt, not dealing with an open flame with a torch or even the solvent-based adhesives, whether it's TPO or modified, and having essentially all of that done at the factory and then just sticking the factory-applied film on it, it greatly reduces the health and safety risks afforded on the roof. It's really something to celebrate,” she explained.

Abby didn’t shy away from the broader implications either noting that these safety improvements aren’t just about compliance but also about reducing labor challenges and outlining how the safer, easier application process helps address labor shortages by allowing crews to complete jobs more efficiently. “The labor is less, and the install cost is comparable, but the profits are higher.”
