Archetto Construction, Inc., in collaboration with Roof Hugger, made waves in the construction industry with its completed reroofing project in Millville, New Jersey back in 2011. Faced with the challenge of upgrading a 40,500-square-foot roof, the company implemented an innovative and efficient retrofit, marking a significant achievement in the field of commercial roofing.
The project, finished in March 2011, involved installing a 24 GA Star Buildings standing seam roof system over an older 26 GA PBR roof. The unique installation process incorporated Roof Hugger’s Model “C” factory-notched sub-purlins, known for enhancing energy efficiency and structural stability. Due to the location’s exposure to coastal wind forces, Archetto reinforced the sub-framing at strategic zones like corners and low-eaves, ensuring a durable and long-lasting roof.
In a move towards sustainability, two inches of unfaced insulation were added between the old and new roofing layers. This upgrade significantly improved the building's thermal resistance, providing better energy efficiency for the structure. Brian Rehm of Archetto praised the seamless collaboration with Star Buildings, stating, “Overall, the owner and ourselves are happy with the installation. We also found that, as a Star Building’s dealer, that we didn’t have to recreate the wheel when it came to providing design data for our new roof system, because there was an existing relationship between Star and Roof Hugger. This expedited the process.”
The project, which started in February and wrapped up in just under a month, represents the importance of strategic partnerships and innovative construction methods. While it’s easy to get lost in technical specifics, the lesson here is one of efficiency, resilience and forward-thinking design that we can continue to learn from and can be thanked for setting today’s standards.
