Project Honors Veterans by Making Free Roof Repairs

By Cass Jacoby, RCS reporter.

A Navy veteran received a new roof from Vinton Roofing, Habitat for Humanity of Franklin County and Owens Corning out of gratitude for his service.

With the purpose of showing recognition and respect for veterans and their families, the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project provides free roof repairs to those who have served.

The Owens Corning National Roof Deployment Project has made more than 225 roof repair and replacements possible for commendable veterans across the country.

Owen's Corning finds local, platinum-preferred contractors to partner with Habitat for Humanity to find a veteran in need.

When Habitat for Humanity identified a deserving candidate, a Rocky Mount Navy veteran (who wishes to remain anonymous), Owens Corning supplied the materials and partnered with Vinton Roofing to do the installation.

"We were honored to do it. Vinton Roofing has always liked to give back to the community," Jason Webb, general manager of Vinton Roofing, shared with the Franklin-News Post. "We're also honored to work with Habitat and Owens Corning."  Work on the veteran's home in need started on Monday, with old shingles being torn off and replaced.

"The project is a chance for us to give back to this veteran," Jason said. "He's spent his time and energy protecting us, and we're hoping that this gives him a peace of mind knowing that his home and his family are safe with a new roof over their heads."

The roof install marks Vinton Roof's first job as part of the Roof Deployment Program. "We're just really grateful we are in the area and can give back," Jason said. "We've been in business for 21 years, and we get a lot of satisfaction from genuinely helping people out that truly need it that aren't looking for it."

This project also marks the inauguration of Habitat for Humanity's new Critical Repairs Program. In keeping with the new program, Board President John Wilson of Habitat for Humanity of Franklin County has announced more projects to come this year, including more new homes built and more critical repairs.
