Preventative Action is How you Ensure Cyber Security

NRCA ensure cyber security
September 10, 2022 at 6:00 p.m.

By Cass Jacoby.

Most roofers don’t know or recognize that their company is facing significant cyber liability. Learn about why you should check your level of cyber security insurance now rather than later.

In Season 4, Episode 38 of the Roofing Road Trips Podcast Heidi J. Ellsworth meets with cyber insurance expert Andy Metzler of Acrisure and Cheryl Ambrose of the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) to talk about the NRCA’s Cyber Liability Insurance Program.

To help members address cyber liability risks, NRCA has partnered with Acrisure to offer insurance policies that cover business interruption exposures (any business reliant on technology for its day-to-day operations has this exposure), as well as the privacy risks posed by storing sensitive data and costs associated with cyber incident response.

Everyone has a crime liability package, but rarely are people smart about protecting cyber risks, and this program seeks to help protect contractors. The key to avoiding cyber risks is in preventative care that comes from education.

“One of the things that's great about this is it comes with a lot of tools to help companies prepare and look for these cyber risks, and that's a crucial component of this,” says Andy. “Obviously, the insurance companies don't want to have to pay a claim, so they want our companies to be educated, and they want to give you as many tools as possible.”

Being proactive about your cyber security is a great way to avoid gaps in your coverage, as many roofers don’t recognize that these risks may not be adequately covered under another policy. Knowing the level of risk and protection that your company is at legally when it comes to cyber security is critical to making informed business decisions.

“I mean, the whole idea with all of the NRCA programs, this one specifically is to help with things that we've identified as potential risks, serious risks that our membership should be looking at from a protection standpoint,” says Cheryl.  “The easier we can make it for folks to access that information, which is the goal through the website through either reaching out to myself or anybody on the risk team or Andy directly, is to get that information in front of them so they can make a great educated decision for their business.”
