As a 911 dispatcher in Ocean City, New Jersey, a mom of two, and battling breast cancer, Amber Adoranto has a full plate. On top of all that, her home needed a new roof. This holiday season, Amber’s coworkers from Ocean City Police Department wanted to show their appreciation for everything she does and surprise her with a gift she couldn’t refuse.
Amber has worked with the Ocean City Police Department for ten years now. She still has three rounds of chemotherapy to go through and manages to make it to work three days a week. Wanting to set an important example for her children, Amber told OCNJ Daily, “I want my kids to know that no matter what, you have to keep going.”
Captain Charlie Simonson explained to OCNJ Daily, “Amber is really a valuable member of the team. We were talking on Wednesday and she said she was planning to use her tax refund to put on a new roof...We decided to do something for her.”
Her colleagues reached out to Action Creations Roofing and Siding to see if they could help with her roofing needs. Nick Frucelli from Action Creations shared in his interview with Patch, “She had some wind damage, and her roof was really old already...It was ready to be replaced.”
When Action Creations Roofing arrived at Amber’s home, she believed she was getting roof repairs done. However, it was a day full of surprises. The company showed up with a construction crew to install a new roof for her, for free. They brought bags filled with gifts from the company for her 9-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son. They even put in a rush order for breast cancer awareness hoodies to wear while construction was underway. And to keep the magic of Christmas alive, Captain Simonson shared that the crew, “told the kids that Santa needed a new roof for a smooth landing.”
Lieutenant Pat Randles, a spokesman for the Ocean City Police Department, shared with OCNJ that the re-roof was a small token of their appreciation for Amber’s dedication to the police department and her hard work throughout the years. He explains, “She helps everyone else...We are happy to be able to partner with PBA Local 61 and Action Creations Roofing to help her.”
Officer Randy Clark appreciates that in their line of work, everyone looks out for each other, noting, “I think it is amazing. We are one giant family...Everyone is looking out for each other. We have all come together for a co-worker who needs a little help.”
Amber was shocked and grateful for the gift of a new, free roof. She expressed her appreciation in her interview with OCNJ, “This is incredible...Everyone is amazing to do this for me and my family. I was not expecting all of this.” Not only did Santa have a smooth landing on Christmas, but Amber and her children have a safe roof over their heads to protect them.
