For the past 37 years, the Charleston, South Carolina, Ronald McDonald House has acted as a ‘home-away-from-home’ for families with children undergoing extensive medical treatment. Located just steps away from the hospital, the Ronald McDonald House helps these families lead as normal a life as possible, providing comfortable beds to families, hot meals, a caring staff and a four-legged pal named Gardy.
When the Baker Roofing Company did an inspection for some leaks on the Ronald McDonald House of Charleston’s roof, it was clear that much of the roof had experienced varying degrees of deterioration. The integrity of the entire roof was threatened, and a majority of the roof was beyond cost-feasible repair.
As the Ronald McDonald House is a charity, they did not have the budget to put towards a roof replacement during the pandemic when their services and donations were so limited. Luckily, Contract Manager of Baker Roofing Charleston, Jason Widener directed Ronald McDonald House to contact the Roofing Alliance for help.
In 2017, the Roofing Alliance entered a partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities to adopt all 165 Ronald McDonald House roofs. The partnership assures all RMHC locations that their roofs will be provided timely inspections and service on repairs they require, or in some cases, a new roof.
Through Baker Roofing Company’s membership in the Roofing Alliance, and their relationships with other manufacturer members, the Ronald McDonald House was able to get their roof replaced at no cost. Baker Roofing of Charleston proudly donated $60,000 worth of labor installing materials donated by Carlisle Syntec, in addition to adoptingand they also adopted the Ronald McDonald House for all future service required.
“We are honored to be involved with an organization that does so much to help people in need,” Jason said. The replacement of the roof with a more up-to-date system makes better use of funding and secures the future use of the house.
“We are grateful to Carlisle Roofing for supplying RMHC Charleston the roofing materials needed and to Baker Roofing for making this project happen. We were 10 years overdue in replacing our roof and are especially thankful for this gift when supplies are so limited during this pandemic,” says CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities Charleston, Kathy Papadimitriou.
“RMHC Charleston has been fortunate to not have had to close our doors during this time. It’s because of our community and supporters that make it all possible and with donations like this that allow us to keep fulfilling our mission. On behalf of all the families the new roof will house, we thank you.”
